Starbucks comes to Johannesburg

Crowds gathered on Thursday morning, awaiting the opening of South Africa’s first Starbucks outlet.

The crowd – coffee lovers and media –  was abuzz, energised by live music, dancers, a countdown and a spray of green confetti.

Starbucks’ global mission includes the phrase: one person, one cup, and one neighbourhood at a time. The first store in South Africa has chosen Rosebank as its first neighbourhood, and will be making the Mall of Africa in Midrand its second chosen neighbourhood next week.

Starbucks opens its first South African store

BY 7.30am on Thursday, when the world’s largest coffee company, Starbucks, opened its first store in South Africa, the throng of fans who had been lining up from the night before were desperately in need of a cuppa.

Coffee consumption in the country has grown as consumers, particularly in the middle–to–higher income market, move from instant coffee to premium and freshly brewed offerings.
